2024 Opens with Stop-and-Go System Certifications in California

Stop-and-Go profilers are being certified at the Caltrans certification track under IPCP

Caltrans has revised CTM 387 to allow for stop-and-go (SAG) profilers to certify as smoothness test equipment. The certification is open to any device that can perform the four speed scenarios with the same accuracy as an inertial profiler at constant speed. This includes being able to pass the bounce and block verifications along with the repeatability and accuracy per AASHTO r56.

The CTM 387 revisions are a culmination of two years of SAG profiler evaluations. SSI staff and other California contractors with SSI systems had volunteered their time to collect comparison data and perform the new speed scenarios. With acceptable data being collected in these evaluations, Caltrans began revising the certification procedure.

A Caltrans SAG certification has the exact same requirements as a traditional inertial profiler certification under AASHTO r56. The additional four speed scenarios are where the SAG profilers are set apart from traditional collection systems. A SAG vehicle will perform each speed scenario at least three times, for a total of twelve extra collections. Each of the four scenarios will have to pass the 92% repeatability and 90% accuracy.

As of August 2024, only SSI Zero-Speed profilers have been certified in California. More information on certification procedure can be found in the revised CTM 387 test method. Other sites have been reviewing certification processes of Stop-and-go systems, such as ICART in Illinois.
